David writes, 'you lay a table before me in the presence of my enemies.' (Psalm 23:4)
I memorized Psalm 23 when I was maybe 6 years old? It was the NAS version, quite King-Jamesy. Tonight after rolling out the trash can and asking myself what is it all for.. I recalled this one line: '… a table before me' (provision, reassurance), '... in the presence of my enemies' (surrounded by danger?). This is, in fact, a picture of peace, but with danger and darkness pressing in, on the very fringes of that peace, maybe dark mists moving in and out of the rays of light. Close. Very close. And yet... as the Psalmist writes in 91:7, 'Though ten thousand fall at your right hand, it will not come near you.' At my right hand - that sounds quite 'near', and yet it is 'not near'! How so close, and yet not near? God's peace is different, for sure! (John 14:27) Ok, to bed now, have work in the morning!
